Mapleton Fire/Rescue is comprised of 40 volunteer firefighters and 4 auxiliary members. The area covers approximately 534 square kilometres and serves over 10,000 residents. This area is covered by 2 stations in Drayton & Moorefield and agreements with Wellington North for the Arthur area, Center Wellington for the Alma area and Woolwich for the southeast portion of the township.
Each station of Mapleton Fire/Rescue has 20 firefighters, 2 auxiliary, a Deputy Chief, 2 Captains, a Fire Prevention officer and a Training officer. Both stations are overseen by the Fire Chief.
Volunteer firefighter’s are expected to learn life saving and safety skills through the initial recruit 40 hour basic training, on-going in house training on Tuesday evenings using the Ontario Fire Marshal curriculum, specialty courses such as confined space rescue, first responder medical care and defibrillation training, driver safety education, land based water rescue etc.
When the pager sounds, firefighters are expected to leave whatever they are doing in a moments notice to respond to emergency incidents, anytime of the day or night. Firefighters are paid for time at incidents, training sessions and Saturday truck checks. Members of the department are expected to assist with public education and fire prevention at schools, service clubs, fire prevention days and the Home, Safe Home smoke alarm program. Firefighters also volunteer their time to the Canada Day fireworks and waterball, Anthill Classic medical standby, provide assistance at the annual fall fair demolition derby, truck and tractor pull, boot toll for MD, pancake breakfast, turkey bingo and Santa Claus parade.
Successful candidates will be required to obtain a DZ endorsed drivers license (training and costs provided by the department) and receive TwinRix shots for prevention of Hepatitis (department pays for shots). All firefighter participate in an annual Provincial fitness testing. Applicants may be requested to provide a doctor’s physical examination certificate, driver’s abstract and police check.
